Forgotten Treasure: Library Janitor Discovers Silver Coin Cache

A curious library caretaker in the Bavarian city of Passau has discovered a treasure trove of ancient silver coins and medals that went overlooked for more than two centuries. The surprise find is reportedly worth as much as six figures.

Janitor Tanja Höls had often passed by an unassuming wooden box stowed away in an archive in Passau's historic state library, but it wasn't until about two weeks ago that curiosity got the best of her and she was decided take a look inside.

What she found were dozens of coins, most of them made of silver. "I had no idea that I'd found a treasure," the 43-year-old told the German news agency DAPD on Wednesday. But when she told the head of the library in the Bavarian city what she had seen, he soon realized their value.

"This find is a real bonanza," Markus Wennerhold said, adding that it happened to coincide with preparations for the library's 400th anniversary.

The library believes that the collection of 172 well-preserved coins likely belonged to Passau's prince-bishops. Wennerhold suspects that they were hidden there around 1803 during Germany's secularization, when such church assets were transferred to the state. They may have wanted to keep them out of the hands of tax officials.

Old Furniture and a Stuffed Crocodile

Dating back from the years between the Roman Empire and Napoleon's rule, initial Internet research has revealed that the coins are worth a "low six-figure sum," Wennerhold said. Experts must now determine their exact value. The most valuable pieces will likely turn out to be decorative medals from the Baroque era, Wennerhold estimated.

The coins were probably forgotten because their value was underestimated by past library workers, Wennerhold told DAPD. "None of the current workers here knew that these coins existed," he said.

Library janitor Höls said she frequently goes to the fourth-floor archive -- where old furniture and even a stuffed crocodile are also stored -- in order to retrieve books for library patrons. The wooden box containing the coins was even periodically dusted by library employees without an inkling as to what was inside, Wennerhold said.

This week the Passau state library plans to release photos of each coin on its homepage. Next year they will be put on display as part of the library's anniversary celebration. Founded in 1612 as part of a Jesuit college, the library claims to be home to one of the oldest book collections in Germany.

McGregor, 48, was discovered dead this morning in his hotel room in Salt Lake City., Keli McGregor had been traveling on a company trip with Rockies Chairman Charlie Monfort and Executive Vice President Greg Feasel.

No additional details about McGregor’s death are at present offered, based on an official statement from the club.

“Words cannot describe the level of shock and disbelief that we all are feeling this morning at the loss of Keli,” Monfort said in a release. “Our thoughts, our prayers are with [McGregor's wife] Lori and the entire household as we all try to cope and realize how this kind of a tragic reduction could occur with this kind of a fantastic man.”

Philstar reports that this year's passing rate is 24.58 percent, an insider told The STAR. A total of 5,903 law graduates in September and October last year.

NBC's new TV drama 'Parenthood,' which airs Tuesday nights, features a couple whose son has Asperger's, an autism spectrum disorder.

Wednesday morning, queries relating to 'Asperger's Disease' topped Google Trends, which tracks popular search terms.

While people's curiosity and efforts to understand Asperger's syndrome are to be applauded, we couldn't help but be taken aback by the volume of searches for 'Assburger's Syndrome.' (see screenshot below).

Sheen, 44, and Mueller, 32, were involved in an alleged domestic dispute in Aspen, Colorado, on Christmas Day that resulted in a felony assault charge against Sheen.

Mueller’s lawyer said Monday that she pulled out of The Canyon, a Malibu, California, rehab center, over the weekend after a “major breach of her privacy.”

She immediately checked into “a private, secure facility” to continue her substance-abuse rehabilitation so she can be “the best mother” to her children, attorney Yale Galanter said.

Galanter said he was planning a lawsuit against the rehab center after confidential details of Mueller’s treatment there were given to journalists over the weekend.

“I am going to make them pay like you can’t believe for screwing over my client,” Galanter said. “You can quote me on that.”

A call to The Canyon by CNN was not immediately returned.

Mueller voluntarily entered rehab in the wake of the Christmas Day incident with Sheen, Galanter said.

Aspen police charged Sheen with felony second-degree assault, felony menacing and a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief. He was booked under his birth name, Carlos Irwin Estevez.

Sheen and Mueller married in 2008. Their twin sons — Max and Bob — will have their first birthday in March.

Separately, a Los Angeles county social worker visited Sheen’s home Sunday to check on his children, Sheen’s publicist said.

Minisink Valley School District Closing

The Minisink Valley Central School District is a unified school district in Orange County, New York. The district consists of five schools; an elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school, which are all located in the township of Wawayanda, New York and the Otisville Elementary school, located in the village of the same name.

VANCOUVER, February 22, 2008 – The Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games is an event of historic importance that presents Canada with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tell a story that inspires a world audience of three billion. In recognition of this, the Honourable David Emerson, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver–Whistler Olympics, today announced that the Government of Canada will contribute $20 million of VANOC’s total $40-million Opening and Closing Ceremonies budget to ensure the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games exceeds expectations of Canadians from all parts of the country. This decision was made following the conclusion of a series of recent creative planning meetings on the opening ceremonies.

Thanks to valuable creative input of more than 100 of Canada’s leading cultural figures over the past month, and the contribution from the Government of Canada today, the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games will capture the heart and spirit of Vancouverites, British Columbians, and Canadians. VANOC’s overall budget for all Olympic Ceremonies elements, including victory and welcome ceremonies, is $58.5 million.

“The Government of Canada is a proud supporter of the 2010 Winter Games. We, and all Canadians, look forward to a memorable Opening Ceremony that will allow the world to see the best that Canada has to offer,” said Minister Emerson.

Many of Canada’s best creative minds gathered in Vancouver at a series of ceremonies planning meetings to brainstorm, learn, and provide feedback, which will help develop ceremonies that will make all Canadians proud.

“The Opening Ceremony is our biggest chance to speak to a global audience and tell the story of a contemporary Canada that will inspire the world. So many talented Canadians have shared their thoughts and hopes for the ceremonies over the past six weeks and we are most grateful,” said John Furlong, Chief Executive Officer of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). “We’d like to thank the Government of Canada for its generous contribution and their tremendous support in putting on spectacular ceremonies of which all Canadians can be proud.”

Atkins and his team of noted Canadian producers have now established an extensive inventory of symbols, stories, messages, and themes that will influence the progress of the planning process. The Games Ceremonies are mandated by the International Olympic Committee to promote international peace and understanding, honouring the world’s greatest athletes, and celebrating humanity. The Opening Ceremony will take place in Vancouver’s 60,000-seat BC Place Stadium, on February 12, 2010, and will welcome members of the Olympic Family and guests from around the world.

Earthquake shook northern Illinois this morning

The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported a 4.3-magnitude quake at 3:59:33 a.m. centered about 5.5 miles east of Sycamore and 3.1 miles underground. But it later revised the magnitude to 3.8, and said the epicenter was two miles east of Gilberts near West Dundee.

The quake was felt over a wide area -- from Wisconsin to Tennessee -- but there were no reports of any damage so far, according to the Kane County and DeKalb County sheriff's departments, which are closest to the epicenter.

"We got hundreds of calls," said DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott. "But we have no reports of damage or injuries.

The magnitude and epicenter were revised after the U.S. Geological Survey studied the "wave forms" from the quake, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist with the geological survey in Golden, Colo.

"The information was better understood," she said.

The nature of the fault activity that caused the quake was unclear, Vaughn said. Past quakes that have affected southern Illinois have been in the Wabash Valley or New Madrid seismic zones.

The fault systems in northern Illinois are not as well understood as those in other regions where earthquakes are more common, and more investigation will be needed to determine the cause of this morning's temblor, Vaughan said.

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near downstate West Salem on April 18, 2008. That quake was the worst to hit Illinois since 1968.

By contrast, the earthquake that leveled Haiti on Jan. 12 registered 7.0 on the Richter Scale, meaning it was about 1,600 times the magnitude of the one this morning. Many of the numerous aftershocks to hit the island were approximately the same magnitude as the quake that hit near Sycamore today.

Reports of tremors came in from Villa Park, Western Springs, Minooka, Batavia, Naperville, Elgin, Oak Lawn, Des Plaines and even Crown Point, Ind. In Chicago, reports came from the Northwest Side and Logan Square. The USGS has received thousands of reports from as far north as Madison, Wis., and as far south as Bourbonnais.

"The whole house shook," said Walter Mockus of St. Charles. "The chimes that hang were all ringing. It was so loud, I thought a plane had gone down."

"It was 4:02 a.m. and I was in bed and felt the whole house shaking," said Bob Bulmash of Warrenville. "But nothing fell down. It lasted about 3 to 5 seconds."

In Naperville, Julie Hannon said the quake shook her out of a sound sleep.

"When you feel an earthquake, it makes you wake up right away," said Hannon, who said she had experienced several quakes when she lived in Japan. "You could feel a shaking and you could hear a rumbling."

"I heard the plates I didn't wash from dinner rattle," said Alice Fabbre of Joliet. "The house shook, but it was very short. At first, I thought it was a snow plow going by."

"It shook me out bed. I was was sleeping and the whole bed was shaking, it was that violent," said Rex Covington, who lives in Plato Center Township, about five miles west of Elgin. He estimated the tremor lasted 5 or 6 seconds.

"When I called 911, she said they felt the shock too and said their whole building in Geneva shook."

In Oak Lawn, Ron Cerevic, who lives on the second floor of an apartment building, said it felt "like someone hit the side of the building."

"The glass shower door shook violently," said Tracey Fry of Carol Stream. "It sounded like someone was in the shower pounding on the door."
